Import bank statements from PDF or screenshots

Stop copying transactions by hand: upload your bank statement and Rootfolio recognises the date, payee and amount of every transaction.

How it works

  1. Pick the account and upload the file: the PDF statement, one or more screenshots of your banking app, or a CSV file.
  2. The AI reads the document and proposes the list of transactions: date, payee, description, amount and whether it is income, an expense or a transfer.
  3. Review and fix: the category is suggested from the last one used for that payee, duplicates are already excluded and, if the statement shows totals, Rootfolio compares them with what it found.
  4. Import only the transactions you want. The account balance updates straight away.

Why not just connect the bank?

Many apps ask you to link your bank account through a third-party service: convenient, but it means giving someone else access to your banking data, and not every bank is supported. With Rootfolio you upload the document when you want: it works with any bank, in any country, with prepaid cards and with accounts other apps can’t see.

What it recognises

DocumentNotes
PDF statementMulti-page too; each page counts as 1 AI page
Banking app screenshotLong ones too: they are split into readable parts
CSV file1 AI page per 100 rows
Transfers between your accountsRecognised as transfers, not expenses
Other currenciesRootfolio warns you if the document is in another currency

After the import

The transactions land in the chosen account with their category: from there they show up in your reports, in the yearly budget by category and in the balance of all your family accounts. With the Pro plan, the same place also tracks your stock and ETF portfolio with automatically updated prices.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with my bank?

Yes: Rootfolio does not connect to your bank, it reads the document you upload. It works with PDF statements, screenshots of the banking app or CSV files from any bank or card, in any language.

Do I need to give Rootfolio my bank login?

No. We never ask for access to your accounts: you upload the file when you want and choose which transactions to save.

Is the file stored?

No. The file is sent to the AI only to recognise the transactions and is then discarded: only the transactions you choose to import are saved.

What if I import the same statement twice?

Transactions already in the account (same date and amount) are flagged as duplicates and left out of the import; you can still include them manually.

How much does it cost?

The free plan includes 1 page per month; Plus 30 pages a month and Pro 50. A screenshot counts as 1 page, a PDF as many pages as it has, a CSV as 1 page per 100 rows. Every new account gets Pro free for 14 days.

Try it with your own statement

Create a free account: for the first 14 days you get every Pro feature, no card needed. Upload a PDF or a screenshot and watch the transactions appear, ready to review.
